Who is Margaret?

Margaret Bertram is a literacy and reading specialist with an expertise in how reading and writing skills develop. Research has shown that the years before a child gets to school are pivotal in setting them up for success. A child with a rich language and literacy background develops many important skills and understandings that help a child learn to read, write and speak successfully. On the other hand, if a child does not receive the support, experiences and interactions they need, learning to read and write can be very difficult. Teachers struggle trying to develop these foundational skills and understandings in the early years of school, delaying their teaching of reading and writing. Often children who come to school unready to learn to read, never learn to read, or at least struggle with reading their whole lives.
